Sciatica Q & A
What is sciatica?
Sciatica is a condition in which the large sciatic nerve in your back gets pinched or compressed, causing a distinctive type of back pain.
The sciatic nerve root is in the lumbar region of your spine, which is your lower back. The nerve exits the spinal canal and heads down into your pelvis, separating into two so that one half goes into each of your legs.
Sciatic pain is distinctive because it follows the path of the sciatic nerve, traveling from your lower back, through your buttock and hip, and down one leg. Other symptoms include:
- Tingling sensations
- Weakness
- Numbness
You may have problems controlling some leg movements, and sciatica pain usually worsens when you sit down. The extent of your symptoms varies depending on how much pressure the sciatic nerve is under.
However, even if you only have mild sciatic pain, it’s best to visit Casa Grande Chiropractic, as if it’s left untreated, the nerve could become permanently damaged.
What causes sciatica?
Sciatica develops when the sciatic nerve comes under pressure from the surrounding tissues. This is most often due to conditions like herniated discs, where the interior of a spinal disc pushes through the outer layer and starts pressing on the sciatic nerve. This type of pain can also occur with misalignment in the low back.
Pressure on the sciatic nerve can also come from slipping vertebrae (spondylolisthesis) or a narrowing of the spinal canal (lumbar spinal stenosis).
You’re more likely to suffer from sciatica if:
- You don’t get enough exercise
- You’re overweight
- You sleep on an unsupportive mattress
- You wear high heels a lot
- You’re pregnant
